Cleaning window treatments: the complete guide

Window treatments are exposed daily to dust, sunlight, and sometimes moisture. Regular maintenance significantly extends their lifespan and keeps them looking like new. But not every type can be cleaned the same way. In this guide, we discuss the right approach for each type.

Venetian blinds (wood and aluminium)

Wooden and aluminium venetian blinds quickly collect dust on their slats. Use a feather duster or microfibre cloth to remove dust weekly. Close the slats in one direction, wipe them down, rotate them the other way, and repeat. For thorough cleaning, you can wipe aluminium blinds with a damp cloth. With wooden blinds, be more careful: use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Too much water can cause the wood to swell or warp.

Roller blinds

Roller blinds are relatively easy to maintain. Roll the blind fully down and use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush on a low setting. Remove stains with a damp cloth and mild soapy water. Always wipe in the direction of the fabric, never against it. Let the blind dry completely before rolling it back up, otherwise mould can develop.

Curtains and drapes

Most curtains can go in the washing machine, but always check the care label. Wash at a low temperature (30°C) on a delicate cycle. Some fabrics, such as silk or velvet, need to be dry cleaned. Between washes, you can freshen curtains by briefly putting them in the dryer on cool air, or steaming them with a garment steamer.

Pleated and honeycomb blinds

These refined blinds require a careful approach. Use a feather duster or the soft brush attachment of your vacuum. Never use water on the pleats — this can permanently damage the pleating. For stains, you can very carefully dab with a barely damp cloth, but rubbing is strictly forbidden.

General maintenance tips

Vacuum your window treatments at least once a month to prevent dust build-up. Regularly rotate slats or pleats to distribute wear from sunlight evenly. Avoid aggressive cleaning products — a mild soapy solution is almost always sufficient. And always let damp-cleaned treatments dry completely before closing or rolling them up again.
